Healthy ageing sounds great! Who wouldnt want to grow old and still be fit and fresh like an 18 year old? The degree to which that is going to happen io you, is already determined before you were born. Nevertheless, there are a few thing you can do later on in life to increase the chance of ageing healthy.
The Netherlands has its own Healthy Ageing Campus, connected to the University Medical Center Groningen. The main focus is research on how to grow old in a healthy way. The leading principle is that Healthy Ageing is a lifelong process that starts even before conception, with parents who pass on their genes and with them the risks and opportunities for a healthy life course, or the occurrence of illness later in life. During our lives our lifestyle choices, food pattern and environmental factors all influence the degree to which we age healthy.
The challenge is to grow older in a healthy and active way. Maintaining a good health well beyond pensionage would greatly enhance the quality of life and well being, as well as labor participation, informal care capacity and other significant contributions to society. We need more knowledge on which factors impact healthy ageing and how they interact.
